Gabriel gently takes my right hand with his left hand, as Megan slowly peers out the door. The zombie is now racing down the stairs towards us. Megan whispers, “I don’t see or hear anything right now.” She steps outside the door, with Jayson following right behind her.
I look up at the zombie coming down the stairs, then to Gabriel’s warm, gentle eyes, “It’s ok, Vince, I’m here for you.” Yes, he is...and that scares me the most.
The zombie is getting a lot closer as I whisper out to Gabriel, “I don’t want to lose you.”
He gently wipes away a stray tear on my cheek as he whispers back to me, “Then let's get out of this stairwell before I have to fight this zombie to keep my Baby safe.” Dear God, he really is a one of a kind of man and I am very lucky to have him. I smile a little before allowing him to pull me through the door. Megan and Jayson push a giant statue and a large bench in front of the door. Just in time to hear the zombie bash into the door. I watch in horror as Gabriel walks over to an open doorway, “Hello!”
Why, Baby, why?!?! Never yell out hello during a zombie apocalypse. Not even if you know the zombies can say hello back….How odd would that be. Think about it. You're just sitting on your couch watching tv and you know there are zombies outside your house, you hear the door crash open….instead of running and hiding you decide to yell out, ‘hello’ and then you hear, in a zombie voice, ‘hi’. Now that has to be a very terrifying moment indeed. At least for me it would be. Yeah, no, not going to happen with me.
“Gabriel, what are you doing?” I try to pull him back, but then something happens to distract me. A small cry, not a small grownup cry, but a small baby cry. The daycare!!! We have to save the babies! I run as fast as my legs let me. As I come closer to the door I hear odd sounds behind it…...No..no...no...no!!! Tears cloud my eyes as the noises behind the door intensify. Growls. Not an animal growl but an odd, zombie baby kind of growl. My worst fears have come alive. The babies were zombies and most likely, Tyler was now a zombie baby. I can not hear or see anything as my tears intensify. My little brothers smiling face comes to me over and over again as I continue to pray to God for a miracle. Not a miracle to save myself, but a miracle to save the smiling, blue eyed, blond haired, baby boy whose face now flooded my thoughts. Megan is now hugging me. I feel her body moving along with her uncontrollable cries. We sit on the floor in a tight embrace as our cries combine.
Jayson and Gabriel are softly talking to us as if we were frightened, lonely puppies. After a while of nothing but tears and soft words, Megan and I finally start to gather our strength and minds. I didn't realize we were leaning against the Daycare’s door until I heard a voice cry out, from somewhere within the zombie babies’ growls, “Please, help us!” That did it, the little cry I heard earlier is now going off once more. I swear, it is Tyler's cries. Then again, it could just be wishful thinking playing with my head. “Please!! Help!!” That’s not a baby's cry, that's…….holy cow…..that's Tina’s voice. Tina is Megan’s best friend, she takes her baby sister to the day care in the mornings before her and Megan walk to school together.
Megan is now on her feet and facing the door. She is so shocked to hear Tina's voice. You can hear it in her voice as she yells out, “Tina!!” We hear no response, our eyes are fixed on the door as we wait for Tina to answer Megan. The zombie at the stairwell is now louder than before. It actually sounds like he may have found a few a zombie friends to help him out. Great, that's all we need. “Tina! Where are you?!” You can hear it in Megan's voice, she's about to lose all hope if Tina doesn't respond to her cries.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Tina finally yells back, “Megan! Please help us!”
My eyes are now fixated on the stairwell door. The banging, growls, moans and other odd noises are intensifying by the minute. They have managed to open the door about an inch so far. We race over to the stairwell door to add more to the barricade as Megan continues to yell out to Tina. “Where are you in the Daycare, Tina?!?!” Why would she be asking that? What, does she plan to barrage through a crowd of baby zombies to try to free them?
That’s when my memory kicks in, sometimes it leaves me, then comes back to remind me randomly of certain things I heard or seen. You know, important things I should have already remembered but still somehow slipped my mind when I absolutely need to remember them. Happens to me a lot. Mom says it only happens because I'm not paying attention. I think it happens because…..dang it, Mom’s right. I wasn’t paying close enough attention. You see, there is one important word Tina mentioned earlier, us. She is yelling out for help not just for herself. I know the odds are slim, but there is still a chance Tyler is still safe. Well for the minute that is.
I race back over to the Daycare just as a gunshot goes off from somewhere behind us down the hall in the opposite direction. Averting our eyes down the hall we see a man carrying a pistol racing towards us. As he gets closer I realize it's my father's best friend Greg. As he is running towards us, I hear him yell out, “Get out of the hallway!” While waving his arms and gun in the air like a madman. You can't blame him, look at what is going on around us. If I didn't have others with me I most likely would have been running through the halls butt naked screaming, ‘The end is here!’ Thank God I have a group with me. He is now within ten feet of us as I see a large group of zombies race around the corner behind him. Oh crap, now what? He yells out once more before turning to shot the closest zombie in the head, “Get out of the hallway!” Yeah, you don’t have to tell me twice…..Ok, maybe this time I did need to hear it twice before my adrenaline finally kicked in and I turned on my heels and started a mad dash down the hallway with Megan, Jayson and Gabriel right beside me. You can be sure, next time you won’t have to tell me twice. I learned my lesson fast.
